Adoption
Adoption
Adoption is an opportunity to create a loving and secure home environment, where the child’s needs can be holistically met. Through adoption, parents are able to give their children a sense of belonging, stability, and overall well-being.
Who can Adopt in Ontario?
You must be at least 18 years old to adopt a child. You are not required by law to be married, but in the case that the applicant is married, the spouse must also express written consent to the adoption.
Only couples in a common-law or married relationship are eligible to adopt a child.
Children under the age of 18 can be adopted by married or unmarried adults. They can be step-parents, relatives, or anyone that can show the court that they will act in the best interest of the child.
Only the person or couple who raised and cared for the child when he or she was a minor may adopt children who are over 18 years of age.
In Ontario, adopting a child can be done in one of four ways:
- By a member of the immediate family or by a stepparent who is the biological parent’s partner
- Through a Children’s Aid Society;
- By a licenced individual or private adoption agency;
- By an accredited, licenced foreign adoption agency having offices in the province.
